Instatip #064 - The Church of Light - If pro photographers are fanatical about anything its light. They worship all it’s forms and nuances. The truth is it’s all we’ve got. No light no picture. If you want to take your pictures to the next level you have to learn to tune in. Pay attention to light. Is your light soft or harsh? Does it illuminate your whole subject or fall off quickly? Did you know that every light has a different color cast to it? Pay attention throughout your day and make a mental note about the qualities of the light you see. (Taken with instagram)

’s INSTATIP # 060 - Magic Hour - Any chance you get to shoot in the half hour before or after sunset take it. Diffuse, soft, warm, and directional light makes everything photogenic. Here’s a bonus tip. There’s nothing wrong with playing it safe with the sun over you shoulder but don’t forget to shoot a few into the light and side lit too. Instatip #069 - Complimentary Colors - Above is the IG version of the color wheel. (everythings square here). You probably learned this in grade school but it never hurts to revisit it. If you really want your pictures to pop. Look for images that contain colors from opposite sides of the wheel. Your blues will look bluer and your oranges orangeieieir. Why? I have no idea. ’s INSTATIPS ••••••• HOW TO GET HIT •••••••• “I’m just not inspired today. Maybe tomorrow I’ll be hit with a good idea and start shooting again”. The truth is most inspiration is found. If you want to “get hit by a good idea” you need to force yourself to take your camera out. Nothing gives you vision like time behind the lens. When you feel uninspired you’re mostly just scared you’ll take bad pictures. Instead of scrutinizing yourself so harshly, try and see every photo shoot as a brain storming session. There are no bad pictures or ideas. What matters is the big picture of the work. The process of weeding out the inevitable piles if rejected ideas to find the winners. *public domain image . Instatip #068 - Bribes, tricks and goofing off - If you’re a parent you know how tough it can be to to get your kids to hold still for a picture. Forget about a sweet smile. Here’s a couple things I’ve learned. I’m not above bribery. It works. Ice cream for memories is not a bad deal. Sometimes I just trick her. Don’t let her know you’re shooting. iPhone works great for this one. Last tip and the most effective. Turn your photo shoot into a game. Get on the floor with them. Have fun with your kids. Give up on the Sears portrait studio pose. Those pictures suck anyway. . (Taken with instagram)

INSTATIP #050 - Take a bunch, show one - Pro photographers take a lot of crumby pictures. That’s how it works. Even in the days of film you would shoot rolls and rolls and have a couple keepers. Get over any issues you have about failing a shot. No one has to see it. Experiment and show only the best of the best. I shot this infinity pool at a hotel 15 times before I got what I was looking for. Thanks for checking in. . (Taken with instagram)
